I will attempt to prove that this phenomenon is a consequence ofethnic concentration in particular industries resulting from ethnic networks andsoci o-economic inequalities present within society. Furthermore, the existenceof these vibrant yet segregated ethnic communities does not imply thatassimilation is failing to occur. Consequently, standard assimilationframeworks, which assume that proximity to the majority group increases withsocio-economic gains, must be re-evaluated. Book Review of Rebellion in the Backlands by Euclides da Cunha :: essays research papers
Book Review of "Rebellion in the Backlands" By Euclides da Cunha Rebellion in the Backlands is set in the Northeastern backlands of Brazil. It is basically, a historical narration of a period of time (1896 and 1897) where the government of the Republic of Brazil decided to wage war against a religious group of people of about 5000. This group of people, lead by a charismatic religious leader named Antonio Conselheiro, did not accept the Brazilian government as their legitimate government and was therefore deemed a threat to the rest of the country. Some of the members of this rebellion were in fact very aggressive and uncontrollable. Eventually the Brazilian government led an attack on these people launching a battle that lasted almost a year and took the lives of hundreds of Brazilian army soldiers, and thousands of native Brazilian rebels. The poor, native people of the backlands proved impressive opposition and in fact defeated every single force sent against them and even killed the commander of the first expedition. Although, in the end the g overnments military did prevail over the rural people, and they were all eventually killed. Still, the interesting thing about his book is that it seems to demonstrate that there is more to the story than just a battle lost. When I began this assignment, I set out to read each and every page of this book. Unfortunately, it is not an easy book to read and due to time limitations as well as a curiosity to ââ¬Å"peek aheadâ⬠to further chapters, I was subsequently constrained to skim the entire book. From what I did gather this is a very well written book, incredibly detailed, by someone who is clearly well educated in Latin American History as well as military tactics and it seems as though, geology and geography as well. The amount of imagery and detail that was put into the chapter on land alone was enough to fill itââ¬â¢s own book. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦an unlooked-for picture awaits the traveler â⬠¦ all of which confers upon the landscape in a fuse in a distant and amazing blend of color.â⬠The physical descriptions of the land were beautiful and vivid, but what really interested me was the chapter entitled ââ¬Å"Manâ⬠. Being a psychology major, this was by far my preferred chapter. Here Da Cunha really gets into the meat of the story he is telling about Brazilian history.

Childrenââ¬â¢s Play and Their Physical Health
With the presence of the media, transport patterns, and the physical environment of today, it has been suggested that the current conditions of the society have reduced the consistency and opportunities for childrenââ¬â¢s play, harming their play health and physical development as a result. Because of this, it was noted that such reduction has been a significant concern in terms of health perspective for children (ââ¬Å"Play Health and Physical Development for Children,â⬠2009). Play is often associated with childhood, a phase that stresses the concepts of natural creativity and the liberty to play. Hence, it is highly important to encourage children to engage in plays with a creative format channeled towards learning. The purpose of play for children may not be explicitly expressed. However it should be taken into consideration that plays are something that actually children feel; an avenue where they can express themselves. It is an activity where they gain skills and experiment. Most importantly, play, especially the physical ones, provides positive outcomes that could be beneficial for the children in the long run (Jambor & Van Gils, 2007). According to researches, physically active children are more likely to develop their sensori-motor skills and physical health at a higher level compared to children who do not play at all. Because physically active children learn how to use their body parts in order to experience the sense of play, they develop more of their gross motor skills, agility, strength, and coordination. Hence, active playing, especially outdoor games, serves as childrenââ¬â¢s physical exercise and promotes their health welfare (Jambor & Van Gils, 2007). To further strengthen such claim, studies on childrenââ¬â¢s play in relation to physical health reveal that physically active children are less likely to develop chronic health conditions over a lifetime. Compared to sedentary children who are prone to hypertension and obesity, physically active ones have a lower risk of acquiring premature illness or death (Roberts, 1992). Other than the physical health benefits of childrenââ¬â¢s play, it was also found to contribute to a childââ¬â¢s emotional and psychological development, cognitive and learning stances, as well as their socialization and self awareness (Jambor & Van Gils, 2007). Based on the evidences presented, it can be inferred that promoting childrenââ¬â¢s play, most especially outdoor and physical play, is beneficial for the physical health of children. Aside from this, such activity is also seen as a childââ¬â¢s social arena and an imperative process of learning things outside the book. In this regard, the benefits of play do not only restrict itself to physical heath, but it also contributes to the emotional and cognitive maturity of the children which can help them become better adults in the future.

Writing a Victorian Mystery Novel
Victorian novels are literatures written with the neo-Victorian theme. During the Victorian era, named after the reigning British monarch, Queen Victoria, novels were the leading form of English literature. Many English writers, sometimes referred to as ââ¬Å"Victorian novelistsâ⬠, created legacy as their works were very much appealing to the English speaking communities as well as countries like France and Russia. Until today, works of these novelists still continue to attract people in reading novels as well as writing Victorian murder mystery novels.This essay is about writing novels using the key elements of the Victorian murder mystery style. In writing a Victorian murder mystery novel, there are important elements that should be taken into consideration. The Little Professor has written some ââ¬Å"Rules for Writing Neo-Victorian Novelsâ⬠which are very much useful in the writing process. I will be using Sir Arthur Conan Doyleââ¬â¢s The Adventure of the Speckled B and as an example of a novel written in the neo-Victorian murder mystery style.It is in the form of detective fiction which indeed was very popular. Perhaps the most important element of the neo-Victorian novels is the use of female role models. Victorian wives are usually portrayed as unfulfilled in their emotional and sexual needs resulting to illicit love affairs which create tension in the storyââ¬âthe flesh and blood of the Victorian novels. Other issues also arise from hostile treatment of women especially in the countryside. The Adventure of Speckle Band used this idea though in a different way.Dr. Roylott, the main perpetrator of the novel, was determined to kill his step daughters as soon as they were engaged for the annuity they were about to receive from their late mother. Of course, any case could never be solved without the help of the main character. In The Adventure of Speckle Band, Doyleââ¬â¢s presentation of the fictional character, Sherlock Holmes, and his a mazing deductive and inductive abilities always bring the readers into the scenes drawn into the characterââ¬â¢s mind.Throughout the novel, and the whole Sherlock Holmes series, the character was held mysterious but was a great man. Victorian murder mystery novels have heroes and heroines who possess great analytical abilities as the Victorian novels are not much of picturesque and burlesque which were common in the Renaissance literature. Finally, endings must be less of a happy ending. Victorian novels talk about grim experiences of women (and men) living in cities and hostile treatments in the fast-paced changing of female role models in the countryside.Although the Victorian novels were patterned through grim experiences, the endings still show that ââ¬Å"hard work, perseverance, love and luckâ⬠, dubbed as good characteristics, win against evil schemes. (Consider; form, context, purpose, audience and la Essays (Consider; form, context, purpose, audience and language) Compare the plights faced by the birds in all three texts. The context of all three texts contains elements of sorrow and solitude in relation to the consequences the birds have, whilst having their freedom stripped away and forced into captivity by humans. There is also a strong emphasis in all three texts on the idea that free birds are happy birds, and that captured birds are sorrowful birds, constantly yearning for freedom from the bars and clipped wings that restrict them from the clouds, wind and sunlight that freedom has to offer them. How does the author of text 1 use visual and written elements to persuade the reader to think outside the cage'? (two paragraphs) The author of text one uses many visual techniques and written elements such as color, frame, and focus, to persuade the reader to think outside the cage'. The color green is used within the poster, as well as yellow and white. Green is used to emphasize the natural habitat', in which birds should be and should live their lives. The writing within the frame is adjusted to the end right side, in bold white lettering; this gives the reader a sense of restriction, as the lettering looks as if it is wanting to escape the framing, encouraging the reader to want to think outside the (frame) cage'. The focus in the picture is on the cockatoo, which is in ready motion to fly, free in to the air. All of the visual and written elements the author uses persuade the reader to think outside the cage'. Compare techniques used by the authors of text 2 and 3, to evoke sympathy for the birds that suffer. Similarities can be seen in both texts two and three, in which can be compared. Both authors use anthropomorphism in their text to evoke sympathy for the birds suffer. The author of text two uses the technique of anthropomorphism, as the little bird that is mentioned, is given emotions of "hopelessness and longing" for freedom after its capture by the lodge-folk. In text three the author also shows the technique of anthropomorphism for the bird mentioned in the poem The Caged Birds Sings. The bird in which is mentioned in the poem is given the emotions of anger and longing for freedom from captivity. Although both texts contain similarities, differences can be seen in both texts and compared to one another. In text three the repetition of the gloomy verse "The cadged bird sings" emphasizes the struggle of the caged birds and their longing for the wind below their wings and the sun beaming down above them. Yearning for out of reach freedom from their fearful cage, in which they can only look at the free skies from afar. This technique of repetition that the author uses makes the reader sympathize with the bird, as they are able to see the bars in which the bird sees, and with the repetition, feel restricted from movement and freedom. Although in text two, the author does not use the technique of repetition but instead symbolism. The stone figures mentioned in The Image Of The Lost Soul are represented as "angels, other kings and bishops, and nearly all were in attitudes of pious exaltation and composure" while the lost soul stone figure is said to appear with neither "crown, mitre , nor nimbus, and its face was hard and bitter and downcast; it must be a demon" The stone figures, such as the angel, are represented as godly beings in which are associated with help, protection and light, while on the other hand, demons are frequently represented with calamity and disaster. Although the technique is different from what is utilized in text three, the effect on the reader is the same as the effect of text three. The variety of similar and different techniques shown in both texts, are used skillfully in order to create and stir the emotions of the reader; to evoke sympathy for the birds that suffer.

Apple faces a formidable legal challenge from Australia over the branding of its new 4G iPad. The iPad is not compatible with Australiaââ¬â¢s 4G networks, and its launch in the market has been met with criticism and objections from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. According to the Commission, Apple should not use the term 4G, as the iPad does not support available 4G network. Apple labeled its tablets as "iPad Wi-Fi + 4G." This was a sales strategy, as 4G is the latest broadband with the highest speed known today. The commissionââ¬â¢s contention is that many consumers are misled to purchase the gadgets with high expectations, yet their performance capabilities are not achievable given local network capabilities. In summary, the consumers purchase the ââ¬Å"4Gs,â⬠but end up with 3G performance. A series of negotiations between Apple and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has led to drastic measures such, advertisements warning consumers of the incompatibility and refunds to persons who had purchased the products.
